I consider my self to be technically savvy, but I was under the impression that only wikipedia was a wiki, until I took Principles of New Media. Now I understand that a Wiki is a collaboration between a group of people regarding a subject matter. In wikipedia cases its encyclopedia.
I am very interested in wikis because it is a big part of new media and a big part of the grade for this class. I also know that wikis are becoming a more intrinsic part of businesses today. Understanding wikis is crucial and gives someone an advantage over someone that may not understand them.
I'm not sure if to use this experience as how to wiki, because it seems more complicated and maybe other wiki sites provided better features like auto save or retrieving your wiki. For now this is all on my wiki. good bye

Exploring the world of Wiki....i'm scared!

So it's kind of alarming to see a series of links that direct you to a particular area. Who knew that this is the future of online communication, aka new media. It's pretty intense if you ask me. I used to think that blank pieces of composition paper were intimidating, but a blank screen I guess that's worse. So the word itself "Wiki," is rather strange. It's playful but also non-technologically synonymous. In a way its relieving, because it sounds friendly for users. Wiki also kind of sounds like a foreign Star Wars creature ie. the ewoks. As a child the year 2010 seemed so far away, I thought the Jetsons would become a reality. I mean yes we don't have anti-gravity floating cars, or robots named Rosie cleaning our homes (instead they are called Rumba, or homes that stay a float with a thin metal support, but we have other innovations. Wikis fall into that category. Image:ewok.jpg
