How to Work with a Wiki

What is a wiki?
- View the "Wikis in Plain English" video on Youtube: watch video
What do I need to know?
- All you need to know: Edit -> Save
- Don't worry too much about making a mistake. Everything can be fixed. And you can also undo or rollback from the history page.
Making it easy
- Quick start-up method:
- You want to do something and don't know the MediaWiki code for it.
- Find a page where it was done by someone else.
- Go the the Edit tab for that page.
- Copy the code and paste it onto the place you want to edit.
- Keep the code and replace the content with your own.
How do I start a new page?
- Take our word for it - the easiest way to create a new BaruchNewMedia wiki page is to make believe it already exists.
- Link to it from an appropriate place in the wiki. This way your new page will not be an orphan.
- Look at the link - it will appear in red since the page does not yet exist.
- Click on the red link. You will see a message that the page does not exist, and you will be asked if you wish to create this page. Answer yes.
- The new page comes up in edit mode. Start adding content and don't forget to Save.
Avoiding clashes
- What if someone is already working on the page I want to edit? How do we avoid "clashes"? Our convention is:
- Before you start to work on a page,
- Click the Discussion tab for that page. Make sure no one is currently editing it.
- Click on the Edit tab to edit the Discussion page.
- Post the following:
- I am working on this page ~~~~
- (The ~~~~ will display your username along with the date and time.)
- Now go to the Page (article) you are interested in and Edit it.
- When you are finished, make sure you go back to Edit the Discussion page so folks know the article is free for editing once more.
